If you enjoy eating sausages, chances are you’ve sampled some of the best in the world. You can usually find a variety at your local supermarket, from andouille, bratwurst, and chorizo, to Italian sausage, cajun sausage, and breakfast sausage.

Maybe the local grocery store is running a special, and you decide to stock up. You consider for a moment freezing the extra sausages. But, then you wonder: Can you cook sausages from frozen?

The answer is yes. You can cook sausage straight from the freezer using a variety of cooking techniques. Frozen sausages will generally take around 10 to 15 minutes to cook thoroughly. The cooking time will differ depending on which technique you use. The key to making sure that the sausages are properly cooked is to use a thermometer to check the internal temperature.

Can you cook all sausages from frozen

According to The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), all meats, raw or cooked, can be cooked or heated from their frozen state. This includes all types of sausages.

It is advised to check the packaging to ensure that the sausages can be cooked from frozen, but this is not usually a problem.

The only exception might be bratwurst. While it is not necessary to thaw bratwurst before cooking, some say that bratwurst tastes better if thawed before cooking.

These are my homemade blood sausages. You can make these sausages very thick or normal thickness. Either way, you can cook them in the oven from frozen without any problems.

It is safe to cook sausages from frozen. There are a few things to keep in mind when cooking sausages from frozen.

Food borne illnesses develop from undercooked meat and poultry products as well as not following safe food handling methods. Use a thermometer to check the internal temperature of the sausage to make sure that it is fully cooked.

Having a good food thermometer to check your meat or sausages is essential. I am using the middle one. But to ease up your search, I selected three from the best categories:

Beef should be cooked to 160°F (71°C) while ground poultry should be cooked to 165°F (73°C). Both beef and poultry should sit at these temperatures for about two minutes.

Always wash hands and surfaces before handling any frozen food items for maximum safety. In addition, the USDA advises checking frozen items in the refrigerator to make sure that the products have not been recalled. In addition, it may take a few extra minutes to cook sausages from frozen.

How long do frozen sausages take to cook

There are a variety of techniques for cooking frozen sausages, and each method will require a different cooking time:

  • In the oven: Lay the sausages in a pan and cover lightly with oil. Cook the sausages in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20 to 25 minutes. Remember to turn the sausages frequently while cooking.
  • On the BBQ: Preheat the grill to medium. Cook frozen sausages over medium heat for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • In a frying pan: Set the oven burner to medium and place the frozen sausages in a skillet. Cook the sausages for 10 minutes and turn frequently to ensure that all sides are equally cooked and browned.
  • In an air fryer: This will depend on the thickness of the sausage. Preheat the air fryer for five minutes to 350°F (180°C). Cocktail sausages should cook for eight minutes. Medium sausages should cook for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness. And larger sausages such as bratwurst should cook for 15 minutes.
  • In a deep fat fryer: Preheat the deep fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the sausages in the deep fryer one by one. Allow cooking for five minutes. Check to make sure that the sausages are fully cooked. The sausages may require a few extra minutes. Use a thermometer to check the internal temperature.

Defrosting tray to speed up your thawing process

But if you want to speed up the process and thaw sausages first, then this defrosting tray will come in handy. This tray can actually thaw the meat 8x faster than natural thawing. This is one of the best ones on amazon.

Can you cook sausages from frozen in a casserole

Yes. Different recipes may call for different cooking methods. Some recipes may require that the frozen sausages be browned in a skillet before adding it to the casserole dish for further cooking.

Other recipes require that the vegetables be sauteed before adding the stock. Once the vegetables and stock have been brought to a simmer, the frozen sausages can be added and cooked further.

It really does depend on the recipe, but generally speaking, it is perfectly safe to cook frozen sausages in a casserole.

Can you cook sausages from frozen in an air fryer

Yes. The air fryer is possibly the best method to cook frozen sausages. The cooking time will also depend on the size and thickness of the sausages.

Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (180°C) and place the frozen sausages inside the air fryer. It should take about 10 to 12 minutes to cook thoroughly.

If you put frozen sausages in the air fryer, one way to speed up the frying process is to poke them with a knife. The heat penetrates through holes and helps with the cooking process.

Poking sausage with a knife will not only help with frying, but it’s also helping the fat escape from the casing,

Since you began with frozen sausages, you should do the poking halfway through frying.

Always use a single layer of sausages when making them from frozen in the air fryer. The middle sausages will still be frozen in the middle if you stack them. Also, the bottom sausages will only be cooked from the bottom, and the upper layer will only be cooked from the top side.

The only options when it comes to stacking frozen sausages in an air fryer is to use air fryer racks. Users that bought air fryer racks mention that these ones are one of the best.

If you want to know more about stacking food in the air fryer, I cover this in my other posts:

Can you stack food in an air fryer

Can you cook sausages from frozen in the oven

Yes. Frozen sausages can be taken from the freezer and placed in a preheated skillet or pan.

The skillet can be heated on the stovetop at 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes before transferring the skillet and the sausages to the oven. Cook the sausages in the oven for a minimum time period of ten minutes.

Remove the sausages and pull them apart. Then, lightly brush the sausages with oil before returning them to the oven to cook for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

Check the internal temperature of the sausages before serving. Beef sausages should be cooked to 160°F (70°C). Remember to frequently turn the sausages over to ensure they are cooked evenly.

Can you cook sausages from frozen in a frying pan

Yes. This is a method that I often use to cook frozen sausages in a frying pan. Preheat the burner to high heat. Place the sausage in a sauce pan or pot. Add some water to the saucepan or pot.

The water helps to thaw out the sausages during cooking time. This will prevent the sausages from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Lower the heat to medium and cook the sausages for about 10 to 15 minutes. Check the internal temperature to make sure that it is safe to consume.

Can you cook sausages from frozen in a slow cooker

No. It is not advised to cook sausages in a slow cooker, and this is because the slow cooker will bring the sausages to what is known as the danger zone.

The danger zone is the temperature range between 40°F and 140°F (4°C to 60°C). This is where bacteria thrive, and food-borne illnesses develop. Therefore, the slow cooker should be avoided.

Can you cook sausages from frozen on a BBQ grill

Yes. Simply preheat the grill to medium heat. Place the frozen sausages on the grill and cook the sausages for 10 to 12 minutes. Turn the sausages frequently to ensure an even cook.

The BBQ is another excellent method for cooking sausages from frozen. Keep in mind that the cooking time increases by 50% when cooking any type of meat from frozen. The cooking time may increase to 20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the sausages.

Can you cook sausages from frozen in the microwave

No. It has little to do with the fact that the sausages are being cooked from frozen and more to do with the fact that the texture of the sausage will be adversely affected.

A microwave cooks food by penetrating the food with radiofrequency waves, and it cooks the meat from the inside out.

You will never get the tasty golden brown sausages if you cook them in the microwave from frozen, and also the taste will be affected.

For these reasons, cooking sausages from frozen in the microwave is not advised.

Conclusion

Most types of sausages can be cooked from frozen using various cooking methods. The key to remember is that the sausages should be cooked to the correct internal temperature, and safe food handling methods should be used when handling frozen food products. When these factors are applied, cooking sausages from frozen should not be a problem.
